Maintenance Tips for Plastic Trash Cans — Extend Service Life, Keep Clean and Odor-Free

Plastic trash cans hold all kinds of waste daily. Long-term use easily leads to odor, stains, aging and damage, impairing user experience and shortening service life. Proper maintenance keeps bins clean and odor-free effectively.

Plastic trash cans contain various wastes every day. Long-term use tends to cause odor, stains, aging and damage, which undermines user experience and shortens service life. Mastering proper maintenance methods keeps cans clean and odor-free. Premium materials like HDPE and PP can serve 5 to 10 years or even longer with standardized upkeep.

Daily cleaning lays the foundation for maintenance and curbs odor and bacterial growth. Household cans require cleaning at least once a week. Venues with heavy waste output such as restaurants and public areas need daily washing. Empty waste and remove garbage bags first, then rinse both inside and outside to clear residues. Mix neutral detergent with warm water, wipe thoroughly with soft sponges or brushes, focusing on dirt-prone edges, lids and handles. Soak heavily stained areas for 10 to 15 minutes before scrubbing. Rinse fully to eliminate detergent residue and air dry upside down to stop mold growth.
Regular disinfection is also essential as trash cans breed germs easily, especially those in kitchens and bathrooms. Two practical disinfection methods are available. Spray 75% alcohol all over the can, wipe off after 10 to 15 minutes. Keep away from open flames and avoid enclosed spaces due to flammability. Alternatively, dilute chlorine disinfectant at 1:100 ratio, wipe the surface and rinse after 30 minutes. Wear gloves to prevent skin contact. Disinfect once daily during epidemic peaks and once weekly normally to eliminate harmful bacteria.
Proper usage is key to extending lifespan. Improper habits accelerate damage. Do not overfill cans, which leads to loose lids, odor leakage and secondary pollution. Keep sharp objects and heavy items away to prevent scratches and cracks; wrap sharp waste before disposal. Handle gently, avoid kicking, dropping or dragging to prevent impact damage.
Maintenance priorities vary by usage scenario. Place outdoor cans away from prolonged direct sunlight to slow aging and fading. Inspect wear regularly and fix minor scratches with PE repair agent, replace severely damaged cans timely. Clear debris and lubricate wheel axles routinely for smooth movement. Check sealing rings and replace broken ones to block odor leakage. Discard cans that held hazardous or corrosive waste even with intact appearance.
Discarded plastic cans shall be recycled by professional agencies and reprocessed into recycled materials for resource conservation. Simple daily cleaning and standardized use keep trash cans in good condition, serving long-term use and maintaining a tidy living environment.
